They say OU is one of the top ten party schools in the nation. During my first week here, I walked around and could only see a community of scholars dedicated towards advancing the education of America’s youngest adults.
Yesterday, that perception changed a bit. During the day, the bricks of Ohio University are filled with the finest scholars from all over the state, country, and even world. But on a Friday night, watch out. People are dressed to own the night and get their drank on.
A couple friends and I decided that, as young little freshmen, we would go and check out these parties and see what was so great about the long awaited red solo cup. It was a group of five of us–myself, a friend I had recently made, her friend, and her friend’s two roommates. We ended up at a small apartment with a ping pong table crammed in the corner and about 15 people talking and drinking. No dancing, no strobe lights, and no togas. Needless to say, our young party-virgin freshmen eyes were disappointed and we decided to head off in search of a better party.
We ended up finding something called Dave Rave, a dance being held on the top floor of a local bar and grille. Honestly, it was nice. We were ID’ed so we were marked that we couldn’t be served alcohol, but that was fine with me. I’ve never been much of a drinker and I hate the taste of straight up beer and wine. Besides, walking into a house party and being all “Hey what’s up, cool house -takes beer- bye!” just doesn’t seem right.
So we danced for about an hour and a half and then got some Insomnia Cookies which were amazing!! And then went to bed about 1am.
So, no, my first night partying wasn’t filled with boys and alcohol, and stumbling around trying to figure out which hill was which in a drunken haze. It wasn’t exactly “fun” per say, but it was a nice and needed experience.
Either way, the first week of school has gone great. I’ve already gotten a call back on an audition for a play, joined speech and debate, and I’m joining a few other clubs. My school work isn’t as tough as I thought it would be and I think I’ll do well here.
Maybe I was a little disappointed. It certainly wasn’t what I was expecting, but dancing has always been something I enjoy (though I’m terrible at it!) and going out with friends is fun. But, as far as late night parties go, I think I’ll just take a movie night from now on.
